Communicating With Green Brains

Ever met someone in your life, or at your workplace, who seems conventional, conversative, and lacks imagination? Does this person plan for everything, and can’t seem to function without a checklist? How do you communicate with people who micromanages, and needs control?

Emergenetics, a science on thinking and behavioural preferences, calls this person a green brain. Green brains are structural thinkers who think practically, like guidelines, are predictable, and are cautious of new ideas.

You can tell that a person is a green brain if his writing is process-oriented, clear and detailed. As a manager, a green brain likes safety and stability, is driven by clock and productivity, brings order out of chaos and maintains clear rules and lines of authority. You can also tell that a person is a green brain because of the frequent use of the question “How?”

So how do you communicate effectively with a green Brain? Here are some tips for you.

First, check your own perception. How do you see this person? Remember to look beyond his or her behaviour. Remind yourself that this person prefers to process, guidelines and details. It’s not that this person is being difficult or fussy.

When speaking to a green brain, use phrases like “Here are more details”, “are we on schedule?” and “What does the policy say?”. Phrases like these set their minds at ease.

Knowing your own thinking and behavioural preferences, as well as that of others, allows you to overcome perceptual errors and helps you build strong relationships.

The next time you communicate with someone who frequently asks the question “how”, provide specifics, take it step by step, and keep to time.
