Communicating With Yellow Brains
Do you know someone in your life, or at your workplace, who seems overly disorganized, unpredictable or undisciplined? How do you communicate with someone who prefers to do things differently, cares only about the big picture and seems to lose interest very quickly?
Emergenetics, a science on thinking and behavioural preferences, calls this person a yellow brain. Yellow brains are conceptual thinkers whose thinking is creative, intuitive about ideas, and visionary.
You can tell that a person is a yellow brain if his writing is metaphorical, inspirational and playful. As a manager, a yellow brain pushes the envelope, has ideas that are global and expects employees to connect to the values, goals and big picture. You can tell that a person is a yellow brain because of the frequent use of the question “What if?”
So how do you communicate effectively with a yellow Brain? Here are some tips for you.
First, check your own perception. How do you see this person? Remember to look beyond his or her behaviour. Remind yourself that this person prefers to think in terms of concepts, not details. It’s not because this person is impractical or unrealistic.
When speaking to a yellow brain, use phrases like “I have a wild idea”, “Let’s brainstorm new ways”, and “What is the big picture?” Phrases like these get the yellow brain excited.
Knowing your own thinking and behavioural preferences, as well as that of others, allows you to overcome perceptual errors and helps you build strong relationships.
The next time you communicate with someone who frequently asks the question “what if”, talk about ideas, big picture and doing things differently.
