Communicating With First-Third Expressive
Do you know someone in your life, or at your workplace, who seems reserved, soft-spoken and keeps pretty much to themselves? How do you communicate with someone who prefers not to share their thoughts and feelings, especially in a larger group, or seem to have nothing to say?
Emergenetics, a science on thinking and behavioural preferences, calls this person a first third expressive. First-Third Expressives are pensive, energized by solitude and prefer spending time alone.
You can tell that a person is a first-third expressive if his writing is contemplative or reserved. As a manager, a first third expressive uses words efficiently, is self-contained, poised and selectively airs opinions. You can tell that a person is a first-third expressive because he or she refrains from making faces or using hand gestures.
So how do you communicate effectively with a first-third expressive? Here are some tips for you.
First, check your own perception. How do you see this person? Remember to look beyond his or her behaviour. Remind yourself that this person prefers to be quiet. It’s not because he has nothing to contribute.
When you are with first-third expressives, think before you speak. Use fewer gestures and words. Allow silence and feel free to leave the person alone. By being understated, you win their liking.
Knowing your own thinking and behavioural preferences, as well as that of others, allows you to overcome perceptual errors and helps you build strong relationships.
The next time you communicate with someone who prefers not to be expressive, go easy on your gestures and words.
